QLD: Speed cameras to be extended to suburbs in SE Qld = 2
The Royal Automobile Club of Queensland (RACQ) said it hoped the use of speed cameras on
local authority roads would be accompanied by the same safeguards that controlled their
operation on state roads.
RACQ chief executive officer Alan Terry said prior review of speed limits and the use of
cameras on roads where speed was a proven safety problem, had helped reduce perceptions of
"revenue raising" among motorists.
"Not to follow these guidelines with the use of cameras on local authority roads would be
counter-productive to the entire speed management strategy which is based on the setting and
enforcement of appropriate and realistic speed limits and prioritising enforcement in areas
where speed is a proven problem," Mr Terry said.
He said the RACQ understood that camera use would be confined to roads with speed limits of
60kph or greater.
"Enforcement of the new 50kph limit in local streets will be more appropriately carried out
through other speed detection tools, such as hand-held laser units," Mr Terry said.
