Qld: Shark sighting closes popular beach
BRISBANE, Dec 7 AAP - A popular Gold Coast beach was closed today following the firstshark sighting this summer, authorities said.
Surf Life Saving Queensland operations manager Peter Dawes said lifesavers spotteda shark at Bilinga Beach about 9.45am and closed the beach immediately.
Mr Dawes said the beach was closed for about 30 minutes while the area was checkedand the shark encouraged out to sea.
"It's the first time this season we have had a shark sighting," Mr Dawes said.
"It's a good indication to swimmers to stay within the flags where there are lifesaversto look out for all dangers."
Mr Dawes said Queensland's Gold and Sunshine coasts were well protected from sharkswith both netting and drum lines.
Meanwhile, Mr Dawes has praised the behaviour of beachgoers during Queensland's recent heat wave.
There has been only one drowning on a Queensland beach this summer, that of an Englishtourist at Noosa on Monday.
"It has been a pretty good start to the season and we hope it continues," he said.
