LITTLETON, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 20, 1998-- EchoStar Communications Corporation (NASDAQ:DISH, DISHP) announced today new DISH Network(TM) programming packages that will improve the network broadcast packages currently known as PrimeTime 24 East and PrimeTime 24 West.
Beginning today, DISH Network will be offering two broadcast packages called DISHNETS East and DISHNETS West. Along with the package name changes, the current ABC, CBS, and FOX broadcast network affiliate signals will be replaced by broadcast network affiliate signals from New York and Los Angeles:
DISHNETS East (New York feeds) DISHNETS West (Los Angeles feeds)
WABC KABC WCBS KCBS WNBC KNBC FOX-WNYW FOX-KTTV(a) PBS (national feed) PBS (national feed)
(a) Available September 1, 1998. DISHNETS-West customers will receive FOX-WNYW (New York) until that date.
"EchoStar is pleased to offer these programming packages and provide our customers with new and improved service," said John Reardon, president of DISH Network. "These flagship broadcast network stations complete our new DISHNETS East and DISHNETS West Broadcast Network packages and provide the best programming these networks have to offer."
Monthly subscription package prices for DISHNETS East and DISHNETS West will stay the same at $4.99 each $7.99 for both. They will sell along with our five network Superstations package at a cost of $9.99 for all three packages.
New customers may order any or all of these services by calling 1-800/333-DISH (3474). Customers can also subscribe to one of DISH Network's great programming packages, America's Top 40 or America's Top 60 CD.
The Satellite Home Viewer Act of 1994 (SHVA), enables DISH Network to offer non-local network feeds for private home viewing use to households in areas unserved by broadcast networks. Households are considered "unserved" if 1) they cannot receive a Grade B intensity local network feed via a conventional rooftop antenna, and 2) have not subscribed to cable television within ninety days before the date they subscribe to non-local network feeds.
New customers will be pre-qualified by zip code. If they reside in an eligible zip code area, the Satellite Home Viewer Act rules will apply and customers will be required to answer questions regarding prior cable service and the quality of off-air reception of network signals at the customer's residence.
If a customer does not pre-qualify, they will be offered a professional installation at which time a local signal test will be conducted. If the test indicates that the customer can receive a Grade B intensity signal, an off-air antenna will be installed. In the event the signals are of less than Grade B intensity, the customer will be eligible for the broadcast network packages.
If a customer does receive acceptable off-air signals but still wants the satellite packages, they can write to their local network affiliates requesting written consent to receive the distant signals.
